Southport Central School
Welcome to Southport Central School Webpage. My name is Marcelle Durost and I am the teaching principal at this unique island school. This wonderful little school has served the families of Southport since 1904. In the past, this little school provided educational opportunities from age 4-20, having its own high school. Currently this school provides a comprehensive curriculum for students in grades Pre-K to grade 6. Most students attend BRES for the 7th and 8th grade and BRHS for high school. Our students have the opportunity to participate in the extra curricular programs at BRES as well as the programs at the Boothbay YMCA. This allows our students to develop friendships with students in our school district.
Our small student enrollment allows us to offer multiage classrooms, where students of different age levels learn together in one room. Students also move between classrooms to meet their educational needs. Due to our small size, staff members connect with students of all ages. This allows us to provide consistency as well as provide many opportunities for integration of our curriculum across content.
Students at Southport school are offered: full day Pre-K program, flexible grouping, small class sizes, weekly instrumental lessons; recorders for Pre-K and 1st grade, ukulele for 2nd and 3rd graders, and student choice of band instruments, guitar, piano or violin grades 4-6; weekly swim lesson at the YMCA as well as yoga classes. Students have weekly art, classroom music, physical education, guidance and cultural studies. Classroom teachers integrate fine arts content with the classroom curriculum. This helps our students make connections within the curriculum.
Summer school, outdoor education, field trips, winter ice skating and sledding are opportunities for all of our students. Our small size allows us to offer a variety of experiences to all students.
